Perhaps you should try to use higher highs than 5k? Try a shelving EQ (the one that looks like a step) at 10-12k. If you do it, do it when the mix is almost finished, to put the last touch on it. I would be careful putting EQ on the master fader.Since it then affects all tracks, it will interfere with EQing of individual tracks. It might seem straightforward to adjust "bass and treble", but it takes a lifetime to master. Try to make a special PT document for working on mixing techniques: a recording of few instruments in the genre you work (bass, drums, guit, vox), have a few examples of commersial recordings to compare with regularly, and dont expect to get to grips with it by the end of the week.
